5 Alternatives to the Striped Boxer Short Trend
Gaining momentum since last year and spotted on every Pinterest it girl, the striped boxer short is the summer style choice of many. Comfortable and practical, it’s easy to understand why. But if it’s not quite right for you, or you simply want something a little different, here are five alternative but equally stylish shorts styles for you to try!
1) Statement Floral shorts
Florals for spring (summer!)? Always! Though often seen as a cliché, styling can elevate this print in a fun and even “groundbreaking” way. Try a floral print clash but in similar tones so it feels stylish but still harmonious and intentional. The shorts remain the centrepiece of this outfit by pairing them with items that pull colours from the print. The colour palette was kept light, with accessories chosen in seasonal fabrics for a summery feel.

2) Broderie Anglaise/Lace Shorts
Light and airy, Broderie Anglaise is a summer staple for a reason. Whilst I’ve paired them here with a lace peplum top, they’d also look great worn as a co-ord or with denim (think interest denim like a waistcoat or boxy crop top). The colour palette has been centred around the subtle pink hue from the shorts, and brown has been used as a warm, yet grounding, contrast colour. The accessories are a mix of masculine and feminine, and nicely balance each other out.

3) Silk Shorts
Think of these as the sophisticated older sister to the striped boxer short. While they could be dressed up, I’ve instead opted for a juxtaposition with sportier vibe. Football jerseys have been a fashion favourite for many lately, and the tones of this one perfectly complement the shorts. The Salomon trainers tie all the colours together, and the pearl bag and earring combo harks back to the more feminine shorts. A cap was added as a finishing touch, because if in doubt, add a cap (aka the cool girl manifesto).

4) Bloomer Shorts
Granted, out of the list of alternatives, these are already a fast growing trend. Instead of styling them with a Ganni blouse and biker boots, try adding some interest with colour and leaning fully into the femininity of the silhouette. Pair with an equally delicate floral crop blouse and blue Birkenstocks to pull out the hues. A hand held colourful wicker bag adds a splash of colour to the midsection of the outfit, while a silk scare adds a European Summer feel. The versatility of the scarfs also means it could be worn in your hair, around your neck, or tied onto the bag. What a win!

5) Sequin Shorts
Sequins have been slowly crossing the seasonal boundary into Spring/Summer over the years, and a pair of shorts is the perfect way to wear them. Essentiality, style them down the same way you’d style a pair of cut offs. The colour palette has been kept to a clean but fresh lilac/blue tones, complimented with a touch of washed denim, and the outfit has an overall sporty, but eccentric, feel.

I hope this has helped to inspire your summer wardrobe!
